Scandisk

Why run Scandisk?

The Scandisk program searches for errors in the files and folders stored on a selected disk, and optionally checks the disk's surface.

1. Before beginning
Scandisk close all running programs including screen savers and disk maintenance utilities, such as McAfee anti-virus programs. Scandisk will take about an hour to run. You will not be able to use your computer during this time period. Consider running scandisk while you are away at lunch.

2. Open Scandisk (Windows 95 and 98) - Click the Start button >> Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> Scandisk.

Windows 2000

Use the Error-checking tool
Open My Computer, and select the local disk you want to check.
1. On the File menu, click Properties.
2. Click the Tools tab.
3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now.
4. Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box.

Notes
· To open My Computer, double-click My Computer on your desktop.
· All files must be closed for this process to run. If the volume is currently in use, a message asks if you want to reschedule the disk checking for the next time you restart your system. Then, the next time you restart your system, disk checking will run. Your computer will not be available to run other tasks while this process is running.

3. Specify Parameters

Select the drive that you want Scandisk to check, and then select the type of test you want to perform (Thorough is recommended). Check Automatically fix errors. Click START.

4. View Results

Call the IS Office if anything other than 0 appears in the bad sectors section. If it is a 0 click on the close button at the bottom of the window.
