This is a brief overview of a problem you may experience with your m505 Palm.
Students who suspect they have this problem may contact
us at 688-5635 for further assistance. There are some potential options we can
pursue to remedy the situation. If you would like to get an immediate replacement,
you can contact Palm directly at 1-847-262-7256.
Potential problem:
-Your handheld has suddenly stopped HotSyncing with your USB cradle.
-Your power light also may be on although the screen may be blank.
Cause:
A static charge can build up over time and damage the USB chip on the inside.
When the internal USB chip goes bad, it disrupts all native USB connections.
Serial connections are not affected. Since the problem is internal to the Palm,
Windows and Mac users both may run into problems.
Will it impact all units?
Some people may not experience this problem with their m505. Basically, it all
depends upon the amount of static charge at their location. The weather changes
may even be a factor.
Remedy:
-First, even if problems are not being experienced, routinely synch/backup your
Palm data. A backup solution may include the use of the Palm "Backup Card"
that fits into the Palm's expansion card slot.
-Reduce the amount of static exposure.
-Consider a serial cradle should the USB problem continue (you may request if this is possible when replacing your Palm).
-It is possible to drain your battery and get the unit to reset so it will resynch via your USB cradle; however, you should still consider items #1 & #2 above even if this remedy works (call us at 688-5635 to go through these steps).
-Do not do a hard reset until you have tried to backup your data. Sometimes we can use an infrared device should your cradle fail. Remember, once a hard reset is done, your data is gone from your PDA.
-Although not related to this issue, a more protective case is recommended for your PDA should it be exposed to a great deal of transportation and handling. This will keep the device in better condition and provide better protection should it be dropped, etc.
