Computer Needs of New Employees -- Guidelines

Preface:

New employees/end-users to be connected to the College of Medicine and Public Health/ Office of Health Sciences Local Area Network (LAN) will have different computer-related needs in the area of directory access, hardware (there may even be a need for a 'home' computer), software, remote access, University e-mail account, training, etc. The College's Information Systems (IS) Office has worked to develop the capability of responding in a timely manner to such needs, in addition to providing the end-user with the opportunity to contact only one office whether there is a need to establish a GroupWise e-mail account, a Campus e-mail account, or both.

Priority:

It is the responsibility of the IS Office to manage the hardware and software along with providing end-user training as appropriate. To prepare for meeting the needs of a new employee and to maintain the hardware and software inventory, offices are asked to notify the IS Office as soon as possible when a new LAN-based employee or an additional hardware/software need has been identified. This will facilitate the acquisition and preparation of needed computer equipment and the scheduling of time when the new end-user can meet with an IS Office staff member for training and computer orientation.

Process:

As a guideline, an office director/supervisor is asked to provide the following information, as much in advance as possible, to the IS Office.

  • New LAN User Request Form for COM&PH
  • Hardware needed for the work site (e.g., 166 MHz machine with at least a 15" monitor)
  • Hardware, if any, needed for home (Permission to Use Equipment Off Campus form will be needed)
  • Special software needs for the work site computer (e.g., SPSS)
  • Special connection needs (e.g., modem line)
  • Time available for computer orientation (at least one hour is recommended, more may be needed for the less "computer" experienced end-user
