Developing Pages/Sites for the College's Web -- Guidelines

Preface:

The Information Systems (IS) Office envisions its role as customer-driven computer support for end-users and their hardware and software. Growing in importance has been Web development and support. The IS Office has worked to build a Web structure to facilitate the delivery of information to and from faculty, staff and students. Currently, the College maintains an external and an internal site. The internal site is accessible via the external Web page (www.med.ohio-state.edu/colmed/ar/admin_idx.html). A customer needs to be within the Medical Center domain to gain entry.

Development:

Persons developing Web pages for the College of Medicine and Public Health (COM & PH) site are asked to visit the Webmaster's Page (is.med.ohio-state/Admin/webadmin.html) first. There a person will find a brief overview, technical guidelines about file naming and directory structure, contacts, and the Information Provider Agreement Form which needs to be submitted prior to the establishment of a link to the COM & PH homepage, or the housing of that page(s) on the College's Web server.

Updates and Sites Under Construction:

Sites under construction for a very long period of time will discourage visitors. Providers of Web pages are asked to avoid having their sites continuously under construction. Also, information providers are asked to correct detected errors on any of their pages. It is the responsibility of the individual units to make necessary changes to their Web pages. In addition to what has already been noted, changes may include current calendars of events, new staff announcements, scheduling, and course offerings. Due to the ever changing nature of the Web, information becomes outdated quickly. Individuals responsible for their department's /area's Web site are encouraged to work with the COM & PH's Webmaster in advance in terms of how sites (maintained on the COM & PH's servers) will be updated.

Sites which remain under construction, become outdated, or continue to have errors for longer than thirty (30) days will be removed or unlinked until corrected. The Webmaster/IS Office will notify the provider via e-mail of the problem and action(s) taken.

Correcting Links:

The vehicle of the World Wide Web creates positive or negative publicity for those who publish on it. It is imperative to the success of the College's site for each one to be properly designed. If a link is established, it must go to a site that is in agreement with the policies of the College and University .

Troubleshooting/Support:

Limited support is available by e-mailing the COM & PH's Webmaster and/or the IS Office. If you are having difficulty with FTP file transfers or hardware, please contact the IS Office at 688-5635, or the Webmaster at 688-4106 or malik.42@osu.edu.
